Horse riding/ hiking across Andes, from Lake Titicaca Coast to Rurrenabaque (via Apolo) - distance 505 km, approximately pace 15-25 km per day, duration four weeks.
Unfortunately I do not know where exactly I want to start on the north shore of Lake Titicaca. Probably I’ll start in one of villages - Ispaya, Quillima or Carabuco. In these villages I would like to rent a horse or mule and go with it through the Andes to the jungle. The horse would serve me as a porter, because I will be probably so tired, that it would useful to trek light.
I will try to reach Charazani village by gravel road. From there only rarely used trail remains, described by Yossi Brian in "Trekking in Bolivia" (book difficult to get, but I have photocopies from my friend). All attempts to collect information on this tour, I found only four people who have personal experience. After listening his stories I decided to cover this trek – but I could go shorter and easier way from Lake Titicaca, direct to Apolo. But it seems that the first option would be a great experience.
I'll have to climb to altitude over 5000 meters. Unfortunately I won’t have my winter gear on me. That is why I wish to hire a mule or horse along with Indian guide. It would be a potential “ticket” to experience the local hospitality with accommodation under sheep’s skin blankets. I would take different guide just to the next two or three villages, and find a new one. Finally I will descent into the tropics. At least that is the plan.
Useful would be maps from Instituto Geográfico Militar in La Paz, but they not handling online service, and they need to be pre-ordered. Without a map I have only a book description and local advice.
From Pelechuco I will heading to the villages Queara, Mojos, Tuichi Pata, Pata, Santa Cruz, and to Apolo. From there, still unknown which way, I’ll move towards Rurrenabaque. There, I'm going to buy a boat.
