October/November 2014 – Natan

"Only" five years of attempts, ups and downs, tears and joy, medical help, research, determination and family support. Until 21st of October 2014 while I was holding my wife's hand on the operating table. We talked mainly about the journeys, until suddenly the anesthesiologist left the curtain and we could have a look on nature’s miracle - in doctors’ hands who kept our newborn child. I scanned it quickly, what exactly is it… yeah, the son!

It's one of those moments in your life that you never forget. We were exhausted (especially Ewelina), but extremely happy. Doctors asked about the child's name - and we have not had chosen yet for the boy.

Daddy unfortunately has different ideas, and one of them came up about 20 years ago. I decided then that if I had a son, I would name it "Kayak". Of course, with time I wised up a little and realized that a child cannot be hurt, so I was looking for another name. But on the other hand, who uses second name? - This was the perfect solution. Eventually, we decided for our 3kg baby - Natan Kayak Kozok. So it seems that all names can be read backwards. Dad got his way again.

People say that the child will turn your world upside down, change and control your entire life. In addition you won’t have enough sleep, won’t go to a concert, a show or a journey. I do not agree with it. There are just new responsibilities, you have to change little your daily routine, but the world, social life and friends are still open to us. And if you have such a wonderful wife, at office I’m not even falling on my face from exhaustion, as I'm roughly able to sleep through the night. The child is certainly a challenge, perhaps even partial restrictions, but it is not a fundamental change. Child is still more giving than taking. Everything is exactly the same as on the trip – unpredictable excitement from every day.

August/September 2014 – active

Just step away from the tragedy. 2 mounts ago I fell at the roundabout due to over speeding. So I installed the new brakes in my bicycle - on the first downhill the wheel blocked and made fish tail - I went on the other side of the path directly into the fence. The body and head went forward straight into a metal fence's tip. 3 cm above and I would be without an eye. I knew that even covered in blood and bruises, lost piece of the tooth - I was lucky. Hospital, gluing, swollen half of the face and three days off from work! Picture taken at the accident spot two weeks later. Now I drive like a child afraid to lean on the turns.

Three days of successful skiing trip in the Australian Snowy Mountains with ideal weather. The most beautiful was a wild ride in the eucalyptus forest. Reading the topographic map is great fun, but one of our idea showed up not too smart - first struggle in the shrub, where with the skies on we could not cross the felled trees, and in the shoes we were falling deep in the snow - in two hours we covered 500 meters. Then we decided to cross two rivers. When we walked in underwear in very strong current one buddy lost the ski (luckily founded) and the other one lost his pole. But the worst was that they have suffered from hypothermia, frozen toes did heal for over two months. Luckily everything finished well.

I have also run the famous Six Foot Track - 45 km from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains. The beginning was nice, but in the end after more than 2000 meters ascent, quads muscles felt tight - I do not have a good trail run technic, so the last kilometers were in pain, even downhill. 7.5 hours was a bit disappointing result, but it was nice to spend the time alone with the nature.

In the new job I still need to learn a lot, but I like the challenge. With the whole group of bosses and marketing department of Academies Australasia we flew to Melbourne for training - two very intense days, with socializing evening. I’m glad that I can be a part of such an interesting organization.

June/July 2014 – no time for anything

Long weekend trip to Snowy Mountains was a great escape from the bustle of the city - together with a group of friends we hired Estonian house in the depths of Australian bush, and there we spent the evenings chatting by the fireplace. During the day, I decided once again to climb the highest peak of mainland Australia, Mount Kosciuszko (2228m). This time I started from Charlotte Pass and then I ran just with light daypack. A lot of snow surprised me and I had no signs of the path, in addition when the cloud was coming it was white blizzard around. However, the weather windows helped to stay orientated and after 23 kilometers I reached Thredbo.

It was a time for the World Cup, and that meant lack of sleep. Because how can you cheer as the matches were in the middle of the night. Not only that all my teams lost their battles, for example Spain, Australia, later on Mexico, and my not liked teams were winning. Night trips to the pub did not bring a lot of joy, and the culmination came in the final were I was standing in the Argentinian T-shirt among thousands of happy Germans.

For several years I was trying to get a travel teacher job at the college where I was studying for many years. Australasia donated my last unmotorized South America adventure, so I decided to contact the college management directly. When I was invited for the interview, the first thing I heard was: "I do not know if you would be a good teacher?" I didn’t know what to say. The explanation came soon and the managing director made me an offer of full time position in marketing department. I was disorientated, yet I have no education or experience in this field. Christopher, however, was willing to gamble and take the risk, as apparently I have “fire in the belly”. I accepted the proposal and for the first time in my life I got a office job.
First day at work I came in my best clothes - I was told that they understand if in previous jobs I could dress up like it, but here I have to be dressed more elegant, in business attire. It wasn’t easy to like shirts, but at least I managed not to dress in suite and tie. I‘m keeping the outdoor store job for one night plus Saturday, at the end 50 hours a week is enough.

April/May 2014 – Lightning Sydney

Sydney shone again - VIVID festival in action. Brightly displayed Harbour Bridge, Opera and the surrounding buildings, fountains formed in a shape of hearts and texts messages. plenty of people, they had to close the main streets for traffic. And even though it is winter, it is really nice this year - ten degrees at night.

Back to school. The position was waiting for me for over a year, I was very happy with getting the job back. This time I was teaching tourism subjects, and the class attendance ... three students! Fortunately, I had another class of ten students, and it is easier to teach - this year many of Italians, Irish and Spanish. And yes – Italians were late, Spaniards didn’t attend classes much and failed the exams, and Irish spoke a dialect so that I had trouble understanding them. Except that I had a problem with finding a balance between teach them something, and at the same time not to making their life harder. But it seems that they never can be satisfied. Still, I like this job.

February/March 2014 – Going to Poland

After 5 years I have visited my country. 7 weeks have passed like lightning - especially on meetings. I visited friends in different parts of Poland - in Silesia, Krakow, Torun, Gdynia, Warsaw and Wroclaw. Of course, there was time for class meeting - from primary school, high school and university. I also spent quality time with my family and for the first time I became the godfather of my nephew. It was a nice time.

The second aspect of my stay in Poland was travel's festivals.
The most powerful proved to be Gdynia Kolosy - the largest mass event of this kind in Poland. Resulted in several new friendships with amazing people whom now I have the pleasure referred to as friends. Besides, it was nice to be awarded by "Kolos" for the Achievement of the Year in 2013 (in physical/endurance aspect). Even nicer was to get the audience award for best presentation, thanks to Grazynka rubber duck, which added humor to the slide show of unmotorized crossing of South America.
A slightly different character, more intimate and integrating, had Krakow festival 3 Elements (3 Zywioly). Here, in turn, I met people who's during travels not only think about themself - inspiring.
Besides, I had the pleasure to show slides from the last trip at home in in Zory (club Maloka), the beloved Krakow (Wagabunda and Cafe Globe Trekker), Warsaw (Meridian Zero) and at the festival in Katowice. I thank the organizers for the invitation and the audience for coming and great atmosphere.

However, flying from Australia to Poland, I had to explore something along the way. I stayed one day in Qatar, a little more time spent in Israel & Palestine. In addition, on the way back I visited my sister in Italy.

December 2013 – Reality

Back to reality turned out to be very easy - I think it's my fault, not the advantage, that I quickly and with no emotions adapt to new conditions. I felt like I never even left, Sydney and friends haven't changed much. on the second week I returned to the same job, I started running, and at home I eat a lot (wife and mother-in law cook great!) For the first six weeks I gained 6 kg. It is nice to visit friends, meet for a chat, and organize private and business Christmas parties.

During the trip I had a conversation with my wife about what to do to improve our life - when I back home, Ewelina had already a better new job and a car. So I can say that the expedition also had unexcpected positive effects - so I have to go again :)

Report from Patagonia appeared in the December issue of Poznaj Swiat magazine.

After Christmas we went to Victoria. We showed to my mother-in law a bit of a beautiful Australia, culminating in the Great Ocean Road - despite her advanced age, sleeping in a tent and numerous walks (up to 20 km per day), not caused her any problem. I wish myself such a condition in the future. New Year we welcomed in Sydney.

November 2013 – Back home

I have reached the North Cape, now just remain to buy a return flight ticket and get back home as soon as possible. On the way home I stopped in Canadian Vancuver, but 7C degrees was too cold for me. At the Sydney airport my friends organized surprise party - it was a very pleasant surprise. Thank you for coming and making the day special.

January - November 2013 – Un-motorized South America Adventure

South America crossing without using of engine. Details here

January 2013 – preparations

We couldn't fit our luggage to the taxi! We had to order a second one. But most importantly, they took my desert cart 180x100 cm. Then check-in at the airport - a total of 111kg for both of us. Trolley also fit into the norms - slightly less than 32kg (but I had to take out tires and tubes to achieve it). Then the stress went away - it worked out!

New Year's Eve on the plane. However we crossed the date change line, so we had another New Year's Eve in Santiago. People danced in the streets, and we were having fun with them. Then four days of preparation - shopping (mainly bicycle and special food), arranging shipments and collection of information. Our friends from Sydney helped us a lot - thanks to Alejandro and Ignacio we went much more smoothly.

24 kg went to Punta Arenas, 13 kg to Coyhaique, about 100 kg we left in Santiago, and 80 kg we took with us on the bus. Going to south Chile we distributed smaller packages, leaving them in hostels, shops, people' houses or hanging them on the trees. It was funny - I asked the driver who gave us a hitchhiking lift to stop for a while - I jumped off, quickly talked with encountered man, and left food packaging with him, indicating that I will pick it up by about 3 months. There was no problem. I must admit that with the help of Ewelina, all the preparations have gone much better.

Most of the way we were hitchhiking, but it happened that we get stuck on the Ruta 40 in Argentina, so we took a bus. Once, to deliver the package to more remote destinations, we rented a car. On the way good weather encouraged us to visit the Perito Moreno glacier and do some trekking around Fitz Roy (9 years ago I haven't see it during 3 days camping, as the clouds didn't let me).
I had few logistic mistakes - I'll cry for punishment later. When we arrived to Punta Arenas, Ewelina went to see Tierra del Fuego, and I went to the south cape of continental Chile to start my dream trip.

December 2012 – time to say goodbye

Christmas Eve Summer, Christmas parties at work, holidays - but I was present there only with my body - the mind was already in South America.

Then it went like bullet - buying a plane ticket, quitting jobs, intensive physical training, solving logistical issues, last minute shopping, the website preparation, and planning with last details. At the end packing - and because the carriage of a desert cart and equipment for all weather conditions - we have more than 100 kg in total.

A very intense time, but it also was a fun. The list of things “to do” was shrinking, until finally we were in the pub to say goodbye to friends. Relax, smile, hugs, joy, and hope.
Time to go.

November 2012 – a few days that shook Sydney

Well, maybe not shocked Sydney, but at least my inner world. It started innocently. The first Tuesday of November - Melbourne Cup, which is general about betting on the horses - nationwide craziness. We decided on an interesting-sounding horse’s name, because otherwise I can’t find a difference between pony and mare. Our hero held out valiantly for the most of the race and ... crawled in the last position.

The first weekend – chasing the footsteps of James Cook. We went to see the rock upon which he reportedly landed for the first time, the first bushes through which he tore and no idea what else he was doing there. At least in the museum I learned some interesting facts about his early days in Australia. Besides, it was a lovely 20-km walk through beaches and cliffs. Of course, I got sunburn even though I had sunscreen in my backpack.

Then there was some extra adrenaline - two film festivals. The first was the Patagonia Adventure Film Festival – held only in four countries in the world. Then an additional action movies from Banff Mountain Film Festival – Radical Reels - some people are really crazy.

Cirque du Soleil - you can’t miss this opportunity. I was on the show for the second time, and there is nothing to regret that tickets are expensive. Anyway, we bought the cheapest, but Ewelina jumped to the front rows as soon lights were off. Security had no time to react. In any case, for the first 10 minutes I was sitting tense, waited to be arrested. The show is the world first class - professional arranged artistic and acrobatic spectacle. Highly recommend.

Since I got the permanent residence status, I had three months to get an Australian driver's licence. Well, I was a little delayed - 14 months. I blame the Earth’s micro vibrations. I borrowed a car from a friend (you need to have your own vehicle). Before the examination, driving test officer was checking blinkers and lights:
- Sir, brake light in the rear window is not working.
- Really, and is it so important?
- You will come with me.
5 minutes later, when the officer was behind huge protected glass.
- You did not pass the test for unsafe vehicle, it cost you so much and see you once you fix it it.
Well, I did not pass the test, but I even didn’t drive. What I supposed to do? – I returned to the parking lot, looked around and once no one was looking, I jumped into the car and drove away. Two weeks later I have passed.

November is also the traditional Road Show organized by Sea to Summit and its cooperate companies (Sea to Summit – Tim’s company, a guy who went on foot from sea level in India up to summit of Mt. Everest). The show was for all retailers in Sydney, we had good fun, drinks, food and free or cheap products to buy.

Unfortunately, our third attempt to become parents has failed again - so we need to look at the issue from a different perspective and withdraw some advantages of the situation. We decided to go on a trip - on my dream South America Adventure, and Ewelina will accompany me throughout the preparation and the first two weeks of travelling! In addition, we agreed that we will meet somewhere else on the road after a few months to spend some more time together. Super!

One of the advantages was that the doctor allowed me to run again. Finally, after a forced 114-day off from any exercise, which is my personal record, I had a right to go out for a jog. Such a good feeling. I thought that not much has changed, you never forget running. I wondered when I start feeling the first signs of fatigue? - The crisis came after 90 seconds!
It was a bit embarrassing, I felt that it wasn’t my body! Not at least that I was used to. I felt like I put myself in someone else's feet. Fat belly bounced from side to side. In the end I had my personal record - 75 kg, this is 10% more than during the last run. I gained a total of 7 kg, or 1 kg every 3 weeks.
When approaching an intersection I usually speeded up to catch the green light. Now, I prayed for a red traffic light to be able to rest. I was losing my rhythm, but fortunately, each day was a little progress and after three weeks, even it was still tragic, at least I havn't stopped at a red light.

After nine years of planning I finally will start my Unmotorized South America trip. At this moment it is a nightmare, as one year trip require finalize so many things at once. Once I leave, then I will feel a huge relief. Now I need to survive and work hard. Just wish to get day off from work.

I found at least partial financial support for the trip. A nice gesture of my former school in Sydney.

October 2012 - no idea about the title, no today

Sisters and ViolaOn the way from work cheerful sms greeted me - "just gave birth to a girl ...". Ah, I became an uncle again. Except that is the first child of Magda, congratulations! I think how our family spread around the world - I'm in Australia, the younger sister in Poland and older one in Italy. But technology helps a little and we could all meet together on Skype.

After a year and a half I ended my story with the travel agency. They called me for shifts rarely, and I was becoming more and more busy with two other jobs. One day I could not log into the agent site - they said that everything was still ok, but for me it was a sign that it is time to end the cooperation. With all my previous 54 jobs, it looks like that is the second time in my life where the boss will not miss me much. I have not worked badly, but I could not push hard enough to sell the trips. Adventure Travel Bugs has only $$$ in their eyes, this is a business and not the information centre – as I was taught. I survived about 15 other colleagues has been fired, and eventually I did not appeared on the roster. The positive side is that I gained the experience, feel very familiar with the travel market, have the ability to use booking system, and Sculpture by the SeaI have used several free tours - Fraser Island and around Cairns. Besides employment there gave me the opportunity to work at the college, and helped to increase my confidence in teaching, because in the end it is a combination of theory and practical knowledge.

Annual exhibition of Sculpture by the Sea is a modern art set up between Bondi and Tamarama beaches. I am not passionate about it and I do not understand most of the exhibits, but the scenery makes this exhibition unique event. As usual, warm, sunny, ocean noise, fun. And we met the tour guide friend who visited Sydney again with Polish tourists. This time we went to the Night Noodle Market in Hyde Park, which has a fantastic atmosphere and delicious cuisine from around the world. I love this city!

September 2012 - a bit warm, bit cold

Friend’s bachelor party was held outside Sydney. I was working that day till late on Saturday, and I was starting early on Sunday morning. But I didn’t want to miss this party - I arrived by Chamkotrain at least for some relaxation part with cold beers. Poor Chamko – they told him to get dressed as a nurse. Not at home, but in a public pub. Locals weren’t use to it, but when they understood the reason for dressing up, they quickly accepted his outfit. Unfortunately, I had to stop parting- about 4 in the morning I caught the return train.

It's time to decide. We are thinking to go to South America. Two years in one place is far too long. So we are in a comfortable situation – anything happened to our IVF result, there will always be a positive side to this outcome - a journey or a child. Or maybe you we can have both things?

The only downside to the hospital treatment is a terrible decision – I was advised to stop exercise. So for the first time in 20 years I can not run – the last three months I just sit at the computer and eat hot chips, fat meat, chocolate etc. I beat up my personal best - never before seen 73 kg on the scale. But I really do not get tired physically, but mentally. I faced a strange problem - in which time of the day to take a shower? - After all I was always doing it after running.

Where can happen to the coldest and warmest day of the year was in the same month? Sydney is unique even for this reason. Indeed in September, in the spring, we had the coldest day of the year, cooler than June or July, just 5 degrees. Three weeks later the warmest, same as in the middle of January - 33 degrees.

August 2012 - snowy winter

Blue LakeOlympic Games - each subsequent Olympic Games, as football world and euro cup, seem to me to be less attractive than the previous one. More and more "weird" sports, scandals, unfair judges' decisions, etc. But maybe I'm more picky with time? In any case, despite low expectations, I watched with surprise on the various competitions - I admire athletes. They are robots - but not by talent, but mainly thanks to their titanic hard work. And I feel really pity for those who did not performed well - not as much as in fact they could make.

Fortunately, I was able to watch athletics in the early morning live streaming, not like football in the middle of the night. I’ve seen almost all the finals on the track. It was beautiful - watch the runners from the preliminary round, the warm-up, observing their pre-start stress and Perty in snow cavereaction after the race.
I think that without the entire emotions before and after the race, it's completely different incomplete show.

Until recently, I had no rest day at work, seven days a week. Unfortunately it turned out that this year in retail sales is extremely difficult, and winter is the downtime – shifts cut offs didn’t miss anyone. Similarly in a travel agency - winter is time to fight for survival. And so, within two days suddenly there were not enough jobs for me. Lucky me I got an offer of teaching business in weekends – it isn’t my dream job, tourism is much more interesting. When the classes were progressing I realized that my experience as one Ice climbingof the store managers is helping me a lot. Well, first of all, fun to work with students - it gives me a lot of satisfaction. I have a total of over sixty students from 23 countries.

Suddenly panic - if I take a teaching job at the weekends, this would be my last free weekend this winter. I still remember when last year I refused to go out with my friends to the Snowy Mountains - later, when I saw the pictures, I regretted very much. So I made a considerable effort to collect an experienced team for this year's trip. First, I invited them to the "Extreme South" show, sponsored by our shop - a tale of two Sydnysiders who were the first people in the world to walked unsupported from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back (it was second, but much bigger and better show then two months ago). The show was brilliant and I was even paid for it - could not have been better! There, we met and agreed for the conditions of departure - four people, four days, camping at Kosciuszko National Park.

White out blizzard, alpine ski touring, walking on a frozen lake, downhill skiing from the surrounding mountains (which first we had to climb), ice climbing, and sleeping in a snow cave (with tragic stories in my mind of those who have never awakened in them). And for a dessert – our friend gave himself a free ride in an avalanche. Overall - great trip.

July 2012 - no time to be bored

Simon Yates - the story of mountaineering legend. He cut off the rope with his hanging colleague. However, the circumstances of this tragic accident to justify his action – there is a good movie and book called "Touching the Void". Simon was during his Australia Tour, so I had the pleasure to be at his presentation in Sydney. I was even able to actively participate, as our Paddy Pallin store was one of two event sponsors, and I had the honour of representing the company. After Simon's tales of climbing in different mountains in the world, we were giving prizes for random ticket holders. Speaking to a large audience is always a bit of stress, but the whole event was great.

Pola ryżowe Yuanyang In July issue of “Poznaj Swiat” (No. 7/2012) my photograph of ”Youanyang rice terraces” was published.

After a three-week holiday I went back to college. I got new subjects to teach, including my favourite one – Australian Attractions and Destinations. The first day of class turned out to be larger number of students than the last time, but it did not bother me much. The majority are students who attend classes only for the visa to be able to stay and work legally in Australia. In a large group, however, there are always some good students.

At the second day I was shocked at the entrance of new campus – I had some students older than me, with great desire to learn, in addition, most with native English speakers. I need a time to put the stress down and I became a little more confident. Until I announced the first topic - Canberra. Then the local lady shouted - I lived there for 10 years ... great,! But there was not bad, I was prepared.

Blue MountainsAs I’m approaching the start of my unmotorized South America trip, it's time to finalize the outdoor equipment purchase and test it in conditions similar to the planned one. Taking advantage of discounts for outdoor store employee, I bought an ultra lightweight sleeping bag for zero degrees, a series of clothes, a couple of gadgets I swap for lighter ones, and I bought a ticket to the Blue Mountains.

Winter time over there. Ideally, probably not warmer than summer in Patagonia (though with no strong wind and different humidity). I pitched my fragile tent on the cliff edge, cooked a dinner on home made Red Bull can alcohol stove, then jumped into the sleeping bag. The thermometer showed 8 degrees inside, the outside was perhaps around 4-5. I had to use beanie, base layer and Primaloft jacket to stay comfortable, but that's the point - to carry stuff of dual use - such as walking and sleeping in.

Morning view from the cliff was amazing - fog has been sunk between forests and rocky cliffs. I finished my 30km hike through Mt Solitary, then came back happy, knowing that the next stage of preparation is over. Now I know where and what I need to readjust.

June 2012 - Euro

At 3.30am the alarm clock rings. Well, I have to get up. The middle of freezing winter, outside is almost 10 degrees, and here I have to run to the pub. As I live abroad now I must support my team with an extra temperament. I was proud of Poland as it was Euro host. I was proud till the end of first half of the game, as Poles players ran like never before. Unfortunately in second half they were “dead”. I have no problem to support losing team, just wish to see they want to fight and achieve good result. I hate lack of ambition, and especially when I don’t see the sport spirit.

I was left to cheer the teams who fought to the end. They received applause even after losing a game. I had a good time with Spaniards, as I support them since I was child, television arrived in the pub and it was a lot of shouting. However, I could not drink a beer, because an hour later I had to be at work.

As every year in Sydney The Light festival is held - Vivid. The city comes to life again at winter night, twinkle lights, people are having fun, taking pictures, admire. Because as usual, some of the ideas shock, amaze, amuse, some I do not understand. This year, we liked gray tunnel for every day, which this time came to life with roses and sunflowers (on the photo).

May 2012 - others are on the move

Lots of travel this month. Unfortunately, it’s not me this time. I'm sitting home, but others are more active and sharing their experiences. Two recently completed the world's great adventures - Pat Palmer ran from the North Pole to the South Pole without a day off, running for nearly a year on average at 82 kilometres per day! Of course, the Arctic he crossed with sleds (but in the Antarctic the car was driving behind him), and flew over the ocean, walked the Darien Gap with the military army, but this in no way to diminishes his super mega endurance – running over 20,000 km in less than a year. Because Pat is from Sydney, I'm waiting for some presentation.

The second world stage performance was the first unsupported crossing from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back. Three guys - Norwegian Alex and Sydneysiders James and Justin. Actually, Alex was walking alone two days ahead of Australians (it looked like a race to the Pole 100 years ago between Amundsen and Scott). But history didn’t repeat that time due to heroic Alex attitude - a few hours before the final destination he pitched the camp and waited for those two guys. It is worth the greatest respect – he could be the first alone, but he appreciated the effort of other people's adventure spirit and waited. They crossed the finish line together, becoming the first people who succeed such an expedition. The outdoor shop Paddy Pallin, where I work, sponsored some of their equipment. I had an honour of the official presentation of Cas and Jonsey to our customers during the meeting in our store. Anyway, I met Justin after their first endurance - the first people in the world who crossed by kayak from Australia to New Zealand. They are really cool guys.

And in May Sydney is hosting the – Banff Mountain Film Festival. This year, I liked a lot - 9 selected movies about mountains, climbing, skiing, canoeing, travelling etc. met my expectations. It was funny, tragic, inspiring, silly, surprisingly, the mix of everything. After watching it I wish to set off for adventure. Unfortunately it looks like I’m not going anywhere yet for at least the next few months. Although I’m constantly preparing myself for Unmotorized South America Adventure.

However, my work does not help. Because instead enjoying what I had already, I found a third job - but not resigned from the previous ones. So I work now 7 days a week, without a day off - 4 days in the outdoor shop, 2 days in the travel agency, and one day as a travel and tourism trainer. Actually I like this cool new role - one day I was sitting and listening to the teacher, now I’m passing my experience to students. And I got here from 4 to 8 adults in the classroom. And strangely enough – they are paying attention!

Get this job was not easy - to teach any subject in the travel and tourism course you must be employed in the travel agency. I did it. Then you have to have an Australian certificate of Training and Assessment - no one was interested in my Master Degree in teaching from Polish University of Physical Education. I had to attend this expensive training which was showing how to copy and paste the answers. It’s great it’s over now and I can focus on lesson preparation.

But this was not the cause of poor performance in the half-marathon. I experimented a new training sessions and it didn’t work - I was fighting like a horse up the hill, and here I was two minutes slower then my own last year result. I have no excuse, but I'm angry and losing the motivation.

April 2012 - Easter

Couchsurfing is not only the meeting between the travellers and their hosts. We went to a trip organized by them - 22 people from 13 different countries set up tents together in Wee Jasper NP and sat by the camp fire. I found hard to believe that for 4 days completely stranger to each other people could work together harmoniously. Whenever the request were heard - "I need someone to cook a dinner," "wash the dishes", "bring fire wood" etc there were always volunteers. Nobody forced them, no one was used, there was no the slightest quarrel or murmurs of "I'd do it better".

In addition to chatting next to the firecamp, we were exploring nearby caves. Initially, underground world was ok, but nothing special - large chambers, plenty of space, huge groups. However, with time our group began to venture into less accessible corridors by climbing, crawling and squeezing. I did not even noticed when I was stuck hanging in the crack, head protruding from one side and legs and hips on other. It was a challenge. All doses the difficulties of their own abilities and comfort zone. The beauty was that with each passing day the comfort zone for each participant person was growing.

I was shocked on the third day when I’ve seen my wife hanging in the air 25 meters above the ground. All place didn’t look dangerous - green meadow, rustling grass, swaying trees, and suddenly a small, one meter-diameter hole in the ground. Looking inside was a bit scary - deep abyss. We used the tree as anchor and in turn, everyone abseiled into the cave. Into the darkness. I admire those for whom it was a challenge, they had to overcome the internal fear. It was beautiful to watch them.

And then again sharing stories, interesting conversations, cooking dinner and cake, drinking wine. Meeting new people - that I’ll never have enough. Nowadays we have around seven billion stories in the world. At night instead of Easter Bunny we had a new tentmate – Easter Spider. Unfortunately my wife did not like it, so she moved out. And I tried to catch the baby without killing it. I really liked him, could be funnel-web - hairy legs, but a bit too small (watch size). Once the visitor went away, Ewelina has returned. I love camping nights, in silence, a slight cold, refreshing air. It was a very special Easter.

February 2012 - anniversaries

On 23rd February the website was celebrating third birthday of its operations. I'm pleased with the growing number of visitors, which has already exceeded 33 000, including nearly half of that in the past year. Thank you also for the constructive comments.

Two days later, Ewelina celebrated her birthday. So we went on the ocean side, to Manly and Royal NP, discovering new pubs and enjoying the summer.

On 26th February I was remembrancing how 10 years ago I landed in Australia for the first time. Then I even didn't think that this wonderful country can be my second home.

2011 Summary

Very successful year. The most important event in the past 12 months was obtaining, after nearly six years of strenuous efforts, the status of permanent residency in Australia. Now we are at home!

Travels. No big adventure, but nevertheless I made 14 flights (only 2 international).

All began with my mum’s visit to Australia, on my ticket which I won for book reportage. In addition to exploring the common places in Sydney, we went to Victoria and also explore the wild outback.

In June I quickly visited Melbourne, and a month later I went for Gold Coast marathon. Afterwards I took some rest in Fraser Island, and a few weeks later I admired the reef and rainforest near Cairns.

In September was the trip to Melanesia. Vanuatu gave us all the best events - earthquake, volcanic eruption, a meeting of dugong, an invitation to tribal ceremony and local wedding.

The New Year's Eve we spent in empty South Australia national parks. It is wonderful to discover the amazing and non commercial places.

Job. In March I started a new part-time job - this time in a travel agency selling trips for backpackers. But I can’t push to sell expensive offers, so this is my second job in life where the boss is not really happy with me. Fortunately, this is also an internet cafe, so I service internet visitors and sell tours from time to time - stress less.

After spending a year at Columbia shop, it was a time to expand the outdoor equipment experience. In June I was able to move to the next door shop, an icon of Australian bushwalks - Paddy Pallin. This time I do not have any management role in the shop, but I learned a lot. Unfortunately, the retail market is going very bad that time. Customers come, listen to our advice, then make the product’s photo shot, go out and buy online. For us it means cutting hour’s budget.

At least I have a new hobby - super ultra lightweight hiking equipment became my obsession. I read newspapers, reviews, participate in discussion forums, experimenting - on the occasion of completing the equipment for my planned South America escapade by Forces of Nature.

I was employed 54 times in my life, including 38 times in a completely new position. I work hard and I demand it also from my employers. But when the contract expires, I fall into conflict with the management or simply get bored - it's a time for a new challenge.

Running. Bad this year. I think that the age, but I still try to fight for better results. So far, only one personal best and that's because it was only my second half marathon in my life. Marathon in July was a failure – I blame sickness. At least I could enjoy two prize wins in amateur fun runs.

I kept my motivations by focusing on other personal best - I beat my record for number of days and kilometres I had run during one year - beating with 3113 km own record from 2000 (3007 km) and going to run 263 times (261 days in 1995).

In addition, in November I crossed the earth along the equator - I have run over 40.000 km since 1993. In another word, in the past 19 years I ran continuously for over 4 months. I gave myself a lot of stress on more than 200 run competitions.

Visits. We hosted at home my mom, aunt and Evelina’s niece. After a family visit we again opened up for Couchsurfing. In the last half a year we had 17 guests from 6 countries, they spent 38 nights with us. Then it looks like travellers come to us and telling their stories.

So altogether the year 2011 has brought so much good, we hope the same for this year.

December 2011 - Christmas and New Year

We spent Christmas Eve with friends. It was traditionally Polish supper with 12 dishes, Christmas tree, gifts under it, and even singing Christmas carols. Now I can upset my neighbours with loud music – I have new amplifier and speakers which are doing a good quality noise.

After Christmas we went to South Australia. There we rented a car and headed toward the national parks. The very first contact with the coast knocked us to our knees - an incredible greenish colour of the ocean! Afternoon cliff walk and in the evening watching the penguins. What a joy was to see how parents feed the penguins who fight each other.

Then came a time for Coorong NP. There we paddled our inflatable rubber boat in seasonal reservoirs which were created near the mouth of the continent's longest river, Murray. Further south, the water evaporated already, but delighted colours of saline lakes remained. We crossed the dune and pitched our tent. Empty - only we, the beach and the ocean. We were running, swimming, opened the champagne at sunset and talked about just passing old year.

On 1st January we quickly went back to Adelaide, we returned the car at the airport and went for check-in. But we were shocked when we discovered that flight agent has booked different departure time than we asked. I haven't checked him, and nothing could be done now - we missed our plane. Buying a new tickets was out of question, the price was too high. Similarly with the buses. However, we had sleeping bags and tent, so hitchhiking was the option. We were hitchhiking to Sydney for 1.5 day (distance 1500 km), standing on the side of the road in 46 degree heat! Catching the last truck after sunset brought us to work on time.

A more detailed infor about Coorong NP can be found on South Australia.

December 2011 - Santa Fun Run

This year I didn't run quite well. I have a problem to accept the fact that my results are getting slower, I feel tired, no much inner energy. It's hard to stay motivating. But fortunately from time to time few runs go better.

Relays always have some magic in itself. Theoretically they are easier, as you don't see the individual result (except for the first leg), but there is a team pressure, so you can't take it easy. In 160+ age category (the total age of four runners) at 800m we took 4th place in the State Club Championships, but we got better at a distance of 1500m and have won gold (age 120+).

A week later I went on a Santa Fun Run. At the start three thousand people stood in identical costumes - all in red shorts, jackets, hats and white beards. I started like an idiot, almost trampling little kids on my way, who ran and friendly waved to the spectators. After two minutes I was alone in the company of leading cyclist. The police blocked the road and I ran like a wild animal, introducing locals and tourists in amazement at the sight of rushing Santa Claus. It was terribly hot in the Santa uniform. At the finish line in CBD Sydney TV "live" was waiting for me and I won the first prize - Play Station 3. However, it is probably not useful to me because I don't have time to play video games.

December in Australia is a month of work Christmas Party. Entire team of employees and bosses meets, eating and drinking, talking and playing. This way the first time in my life I played bowling, watched transvestites performance, and I learned a lot about my workmates.

November 2011 - 11.11.11

Calendar shows 11/11/11 at time 11:11:11 - a day which I thought about since 1990’s. As a teenager, I thought that at this time I would be in wonderful place with my wife and son on my side. With the latter I’m probably a bit late, but at least I achieved two goals from three – nothing to complain about. I decided to spend that day with my wife in our lovely Sydney. Unfortunately, there were no places available on helicopter scenic flight over the city, and hang gliding was cancelled due to weather conditions. So we celebrated next to the Opera and after we went sailing. It turned out that we were taken straight to the regatta. I was in a three-person crew, trying quickly pull the ropes, ballast, control, etc. It was nice to feel the wind in their hair.

As every year we went to "Sculpture by the sea" exhibition on the cliff coast. I am not an art expert, but I must admit that I liked many of the ideas. The human imagination has no limits, and it’s good that it might be expressed in such an interesting way.

September 2011 - dreams come true

I love Mother for giving me education, love, I remember my childhood when she always was nearby. She cared in the past, present and will be in the future. My wife however is a new discovery, fascination, desire. Sometimes to get her heart, you need to make a bit of effort. Mother and wife are to be loved with the same strength, but just differently.
I love Poland as my mother and I love Australia as my wife.

On 22 December 2005 I went to a lawyer for help in submitting my application for permanent residency in Australia.
Since then:
- Trade Recognition rejected my profession application
- Lawyer resigned from work leaving my papers with no one
- After returning from Africa, I received my documents and applied by myself (March 2008)
- Immigration office promised to process my application within one year, but the global crisis has come and they had changed their minds
- At the time my metal fitter profession disappeared from the new Immigration list of occupations required in Australia
- Last week I got an order to leave the country, so the decision could be made

1st September 2011 I went to the Australian Embassy in Port Vila, Vanuatu. There were no information about my case, so I was told to come back several hours later. I came back. Lady took my passport and disappeared. My heart was beating like a hammer, excitement was mixing with the fear. Finally she said that there is a problem... my passport is a little overused and photo page is slightly coming off. However, she gave me a a new visa label, because the Australian Immigration gave permission for my engagement with the country - I'M AUSTRALIAN PERMANENT RESIDENT!!!

Yasur volcano I cried with happiness, what's a relief, now my life will be a bit easier (although I can't complain). Together with Ewelina we waited for this moment only 5 years, 8 months and 10 days. Love you all, thank you for your help and support.

Then we had stress-less holiday in Vanuatu where we experienced an earthquake, saw erupting volcano, swam with turtles and dugongs, crossed mountainous jungle, danced with the natives, were hosted by locals and many others positive experiences. here is reportage from Vanuatu
Back in Sydney we had a celebration party - thanks to all my friends for coming.

August 2011 - active winter

It's a winter now, the temperature at night drops to 8 degrees. Need a little motion to warm up. So, we took a part in the annual world's largest running race - City to Surf. In this competition the most Paddy Pallin Team - Michael, Bhoj, Sarah, Roccoimportant are participating and trying to finish. If someone had told me two years ago that my wife someday start running, I would smile ironically. But I was wrong. In China we were so bored at evenings that Ewelina began to run. Although at first it was difficult for her to catch a breath after 200 meters. Now she runs to work 4 km every day, and she completed the hilly 14 km City to Surf without stopping! The power of well-feeling after running is enormous.

Then I supposed to have deserved one month off from hard training. I almost succeeded. The only problem was that 100 km Oxfam charity walk was approaching. I wasn't interested in, but since our 4-person team lost one guy due to his injury, I was asked to replaced him. I wasn't keen to refused my new job head office ask, and anyway, it was an honour to represent Paddy Pallin team. Such a long march in perfect warm weather, with chatting and joking, it was a pleasure. Of course if I don't take in account pain in my burning feet soles. The march took us nearly 26 hours in one stride.

July 2011 - Cairns

cassowarySun, beach, ocean, wildlife, rainforest. We needed a relaxation. We went for a long weekend to Cape Tribulation Cairns in northern Queensland. As a travel agent I've got free tours and accommodation, not to be missed.

The first day we went on Uncle Brian trip. We visited waterfalls in the tropical forest, a bit of swimming, good food, but most of all - fun. In addition, we saw platypuses and the cassowary in the wild, This flightless bird is a bit dangerous, a descendant of the dinosaurs. Proudly displays the crest bone on its head. The role of the guide is essential - our guide-driver entertained a group so well, that at the end of the tour the coach was full of singing, dancing and loudly yelling people. And all this without a gram of alcohol. I highly recommend this tour.

reef snorkellingThen I tried to refresh my diving skills. Underwater colourful world is amazing. I had a feeling that I fly above the ground, watching the strange shape of the reef from top, side, or if I wanted, from the lower perspective. Accompanying fish hid in burrows, and the braver ones, like birds, were watching me from a safe distance. Reef shark, although not dangerous, looked like king of the sky. The humphead wrasse (called Napoleonfish) is 1.5 meter long bluish fish that played with us. Coming to divers from time to time, letting to touch his side, having fun like with a pet. Ewelina was snorkelling and looked at the reef from the surface of the water with mask and pipe. She was lucky enough to see the sea turtles, which I've never seen before.

Daintree River cruiseThe last day was spent in Port Douglas, which we liked much more then loudly Cairns. From there we went on a trip to Cape Tribulation, which is the only place in the world where rainforest meets the coral reef. In addition to a relaxing atmosphere, I like the Daintree River cruise. Because that's when I could watch the wild snakes and saltwater crocodiles. I love these reptiles, their pride, peace, and great vigilance and lack of scruples in the attack. Respect.

July 2011 - marathon

Marathon is much more than just a running competition. Marathon is a struggle with yourself, timing is not always the priority. First of all, legs doesn't decide how fast they run, but brain. Each marathon has so many stories, how many runners. Here's mine:

This year I decided to beat my personal best once again and I went to Gold Coast. Unfortunately I had bad luck and the last five days before the competition I was sick. I felt better on the race day, but my body was exhausted with fight against a flu. So I turned up at the start line, but I was planning to run small part only.
Big events, however, have some kind of magic in itself. Pre-started excitement developed inside me desire to fight, it seemed to me that I could do anything. Unfortunately, the reality turned out to be brutal, and after the second kilometre, I knew that it is bad, I can't run good that day. The legs were "iron" heavy, tight quads aching. I had to slow down. On the fifth kilometre I've ran near my hostel, I thought to stop, relax and try another marathon in a few months, already at full strength. Some inner strength told me to run a little further on, easy pace to 26 km, when I'll ran here again. Then I began to enjoy the event - giving fives to watching children, greeting street music bands etc. In 1/3 the distance I felt better than at the beginning and speeded up. It was a joy. I passed the hostel with a smile. Everything was great.

Up to 28 km. Then the pain in my legs came back with a double power. Pace slowed down, my morale too. Smile on my face was replaced by grimace. The crisis has not passed, I wanted to stop. Miraculously I got to 30 km, near the finish line located across the street. From here free buses departed back to the hostel. But there were just too many people, I felt shamed to stop. I shuffled my feet, even more slowly. The pain was hard to resist. I passed the crowds and looked for place to quit the race. I looked around and saw other faces in pain. They suffered too, but still on the move. I was struggling with my internal decision, but probably subconscious took over and told my feet do further steps meanwhile. I remember well the devastating feeling when I pulled out during marathon in 2003. Then it took me several months to mentally recover from such a defeat. The mind did not want to repeat it, and had order legs to continue. Timing has no longer the slightest importance.

The last 10 km was one of the longest 10 km which I remember. Kilometres seemed to have no end. At some point, someone handed me jelly beans, easy adopted energy source. Such food without a water is a trap - 500 meters later a powerful cramp forced me to stop and stretch my muscles. Beside me two guys also struggled with cramps, and one of them was asking the policeman for a lift. I was scared - how to cover the last 2 km? Suddenly a miracle man with bottle in his hand appeared. He gave me water, then run to help the other runners. And I was able jogging further. Few hundred meters before the finish line a strong cramp hit me once again. I screamed out in pain and grabbed a leg. At the same time I heard yelling, screaming and applause from hundreds of surrounding fans. I run with one leg limping thanks to the amazing support. Human mind proved again its superiority power over the body. I did not stop.

As to my current theoretical possibilities, my time of 3 hours and 6 minutes was a tragedy. It was the worst result of my seven marathons, but I wasn't disappointed. Paradoxically it strengthened my self-confidence. I'm not proud of the result, but satisfaction remained from my victory over myself.

After the marathon I went on a trip to Fraser Island. It is the largest sand island in the world. It is true that I was there with Ewelina few years ago, but since I sell this trip I have it for free, so why not to take an advantage over that?

As a group of backpackers we got a Toyota Land Cruiser and we drove on the beach following our guide. Swimming in clear lakes, fun driving on sand, relax on the beach - 3 days resting. At evenings cooking together, then party goes on. British and Irish shocked me with their drunkenness, but every one has its own vision of travelling.

I decided also for additional attraction - the scenic flight. In addition to fantastic views from the plane, we have seen group of six whales - a revelation!
Pilot gave us some extra adrenaline with "zero gravity" - the plane was just falling down. Inside the cabin everything hung in the air. Later he gave us understand how 2 G feels by doing a quick sharp turn, where we felt our weight doubled. It was an interesting experience, but after landing on the beach I came out of the plane all sweaty.

The island is also famous from dingo dogs. They are often encountered near the campgrounds, where they look for leftover food. One evening I went jogging on the beach. At one point I heard the approaching steps behind me. I turned and saw a dingo chasing me. I had nothing to defend, I was only in shorts. I turned to face the beast and spoke to him with powerful, low but calm voice. Dingo stood and did not know what to do. However, it's still big dog, and running object for a wild animal is instinctive reason for the attack. Lesson from Alaska how to behave when encounter a bear, has passed the exam with a dog as well.

June 2011 - car

Unfortunately, in June I had no much of free time. First, I bought Mazda E2000 - a real old backpacker's campervan with bed, kitchen, fridge, cabinets, etc. But it turned out that the car was a bit too old. First, I struggled to renew registration at all, finally mechanic No 11 agreed to do it for lower cost. But it was during my third trip to Victoria state, as the car was on such plates. And then I was struggling to start the engine – all repairs cost me a small fortune and a lot of stress. I didn't do a good deal this time:( Well, but who does not try...

We started a new season for couchsurfers. The world is coming to and we listening to adventures of our traveller guests. Most of them love Sydney. Lucky were those who were here during light, music and ideas festival. VIVID is a combination of these three factors and they chose a pretty good place for their show (see photo with the Opera). The only downside was cold night, as below 8 degree is quite unpleasant in Sydney.

April/May 2011 - everyday

I remember great mountain film festivals in Krakow. Here the International Banff Mountain Film Festival 2010 was presented. I was a little disappointed with the atmosphere of the festival, as there was no specific climate, but at least the movies were good. Some of them always surprise, motivate, inspire.

For the first time in my life I took participation in elderly run race, I mean over 30 years old. Here, it's beautifully called "Masters". Before this State Championships in my age category (35-39) I would be happy with any medal. But on the race day not everyone showed up at the start line, so my chances were real. But I tried to be too smart - I decided to run behind my rivals using them as windbreakers. I passed them when the pace was too slow, but I still didn't increased pace too much hoping to win the race with a minimum effort. Unfortunately my friend used my mistake and run behind me to the very end.Not completely behind me to the end, as he overtook me on the last 100m of this 5km distance. I lost the gold medal and the title of State Champion by my own stupidity. Luckily I was able to rehabilitate myself some time later. In Sydney halfmarathon race I ran normal this time, I mean timing was target, not the position. I had some pain and crises during the race, but except it struggle with myself is a real pleasure. Although I had lacked a little luck to go under 80 minutes mark, but this was my personal best.

testing the packraft I run to the post office once a week. New packages with ultralight trekking equipment from the U.S. Are arriving to me on a regular basis. I bought a new tent and the winter mat from Big Agnes, strong and lightweight packraft with an oar, a titanium cup, a UV sterilizer to purify a water, and many smaller accessories. Collecting my stuff for Unmotorized South America Adventure gives me a lot of fun.

We also organized a party to celebrate our return from China. We were delayd almost a year, but our anger at school officials was gone now, so mostly good memories reminded. Our friends dressed in Chinese costumes, they watched slide show, participated in competitions, ate Chinese food. We had fun.

February 2011 - trips

with aunt and mother at 12 Apostles February was a traveling month. As my mother arrived I had to show her this beautiful country. I hired a car and drove along the famous costal cliff – The Great Ocean Road. These amazing rock formations the nature has sculpted along the Southern Ocean coast. There is a very picturesque landscape - blue sky with white clouds, turquoise water, golden-red sandstones and green vegetation - excellent composition. In addition to watching the scenery we drove into the eucalyptus forest searching for koalas. We have seen them on every second tree. koala falls asleep soonUsually koalas were sleeping, but sometimes happened to see them during a meal. These animals are so lazy that one of them fall asleep while trying to reach the leaves – his hand froze motionless and seconds later he fall half a meter down. Fortunately for him he instinctively grabbed a tree and stopped.

After visiting Melbourne, where we welcomed Chinese New Year, we went to Phillip Island. It is a tourist place, but worth seeing. We sat on the platform looking at the sea after the sunset. Once the dusk sets the penguins started to leave the water. They walked in small groups straight in our direction - to the first dune. There, feel already safer, they took a rest, and then continue slowly toward their burrows (up to 2km!). The view was wonderful! Little Penguins are the smallest of penguin species in the world, have only up to 35 cm in height. Then we followed the penguins on wooden footbridges. Inland were heard noisy frantic squeals of penguins cubs, which waited for their parents carrying food for them. It was an incredible spectacle when adult meets with young. In addition, we were able to see two couples who probably just fell in love, showing the sensitivity by picking up spouts, as in the Disney fairy tales. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for the Penguins, photographing was prohibited.

fighting kangaroos Two weeks later we decided to follow the slogan: "If you haven’t seen outback, you haven’t seen Australia". I agree with the saying and also I think that the outback is the most beautiful and the wildest part of the continent. This year the country was hit by floods, leaving many roads still impassable (even in 43°C heat). This forced us to use some detours, so we chose the slow but beautiful red gravel roads, which are simply unique. We were in outback just a few days but we were able to see the motionless lizards, hungry wombats, running emus, big hairy spider, and the first time for me - fighting kangaroos. Kangaroos were exercising or playing by boxing, wrestling or kicking.

We arrived to Lightning Ridge, a mining town famous for their black opals. This is a very special place, full of strange people looking for adventure, happiness, escape outbackfrom real life, freedom, or any other reason to be able invest their time in the lottery, which the job of opal seeker surly is. Many of them spend years without the success, or become rich just in few weeks. However local living conditions are far from ideal, as living in a rusted caravan is not my preference. We didn’t find any opals, but we felt the atmosphere of real Australia.

January 2011 - summer

I have lived in Australia for so many years, but haven’t tried yet the most popular water sport. So I went to the surfing class. Ocean was throwing me like a table cloth, two-meters high waves were laughing at me. However, I had satisfaction when I was able to stand on a board and surf the wave. Without any control of course, but it doesn’t matter at this point. I broke my toe the second time, I was shaking from cold, burning my skin, keeping salt water in my mouth, I can confirmed the fact that water is not my passion, surfing won’t be my hobby. But it was worth the try.

I won a plane ticket recently, but I had no idea how I can use it. However, the sponsor has agreed that the ticket might be used by the family. In this way my mother came to Sydney with visit. For me, this is an opportunity to see the city from a different perspective. Mum along with her friend (they arrived together) are amazed with things that for me did not even exist before - flower in the garden, a bird on a tree, the strange neighboring house architecture, shopping window display, people fashion, palm in front of the house etc. I’m learning a lot.

Opera in Domain Summer in the city. Therefore, many activities take place outdoors. My favorites are the concerts in the city park, which according to some sources even 70.000 people gather together. Such a great number of people are due the connection of excellent weather, free entry and possibilities to bring chairs, blankets, food and alcohol, as well as fantastic musical performance. On one Saturday night we were listening great symphony orchestra, and a week later we were watching an opera - this year “Carmen” was on stage. Sydney council takes care for its residents. Australia Day on 26 January there are a lot of presentations, concerts, speeches, free entry to museums, parades and fireworks. Great show leaves an incredible impressions.

When I finished my study in Poland 10 years ago, virtually none of my friends had an email address yet. Our contacts were faded. Fortunately our world is small. On the Sydney streets I met by chance my old friend from university. It’s good she recognized me, as I would pass by. We immediately went to the pub and were chatting about old friends from our student house. I never know what interesting will happen each day.

December 2010 - Christmas and New Year's Eve

Christmas Eve in our Polish tradition is one of the most beautiful days of the year. It always has a unique atmosphere. Even when instead of frost and snow behind the window crickets are singing. The next day, my wife, niece and group of friends had rented a car and went out to conquer the red center of the continent. For me, Christmas is a time when we allow ourselves to laziness and we do what we like. When I was alone at home for over a week, I reorganized my flat for South America trip preparation. Maps and equipment were lying in every corner, and as soon as I returned from work, I immediately started looking for information online, read forums and variety of reviews. I’m buying new ultra-light equipment via the Internet, and then was running to the post office to pick it up – what’s a joy to open a new package! I compare the topographic maps with satellite imagery from Google Earth, I’m inserting waypoints and converting them, uploading to GPS. I was in a trance. I reached the apogee when I received accurate scale and I could begin to weight my gears - I love numbers. The journey does not begin at the time of leaving home, only when the decision of it was made and preparation begins.

I back to reality on the New Year's Eve, when it would not make sense to spend it at home. I met up with friends on the Coogee Beach. No dancing, but it was a warm evening and peaceful ocean, fireworks in the background, talks and ... polite police, asking us not to drink on the beach, because alcohol and glass is banned on the sand. They came, greeted, apologized, explained, asked and gone, leaving us with open bottles. How can you respond to that attitude? – We drank what was already open, gathered the bottles and moved out to the nearby grass, where the alcohol wasn’t prohibited (I think?). If someone treats me polite, the respond should be the same.

December 2010 - visit

grill on the beach Why I never had an uncle in America? That would be an adventure ... It does not matter. Ewelina has wanted to invite his niece here. She had spent a lot of time with her, of course, long, long time ago. Currently, Anne is already taller than Ewelina. So we bought Ann’s a ticket to Australia. As a result of her arrival I lost my wife for the next two months – she is visiting with her niece at all Sydney corners. No wonder, Sydney is so beautiful.

I went to the ANZ stadium for the U2 concert. The cheapest tickets allowed me to stay very close to the stage. With one small problem - I was behind the stage. Well, I had to sneak to another zone. A moment later I sat at the same distance to the scene, but with a much better view. Bono gave a show, with private and political dedications, he had entertained the audience. In latest Metallica concert people were sitting calm around me, and half of the 80,000 U2 audiences stood and danced for the whole concert.

November/December 2010 - a bit of everything

toe in pain Sometimes everything goes according to the plan, and sometimes just the opposite. Apparently I had reason to celebrate the victory, because we won the silver medal in the relay 4x1500 meters on the New South Wales club championships. Yes, but I ran it in 160 + age category. It means that the total age of our four runners had to be at least 160 years. It’s sad. However, there is nothing to complain about. In the evening after the race I went to play football with the friends. And I played barefoot, I hit my toes on the lawn. It hurt, but we were playing on. After the match I suffered the pain - and two days later my yellow-brown toe was broken as X-ray had shown. Not only that we lost the match 9:10, the worst I couldn’t run for the next few weeks. It was a miracle that limping Michael was allowed to work.

Santa Claus fun run I met Dave from Canberra. He is an expert in the lightweight trekking. This was a good lesson and preparation to my planned unmotorized escapade through South America. I had no idea that some ultra weight equipment exist at all. Dave commented it with one phrase - Australia is still in the Dark Ages. Now, I’m slowly buying online new ultra-light equipment from the USA.

Estonian House in cooperation with the Polish Consulate organized "Katyn" movie session. As the end credits appeared the room was in complete silence. It was the best comment for this good, but sad true story movie (World War II). Holidays are coming. One morning I saw a running Santa Claus. A moment later, the second one. And another one. It turned out that there was a fun run of hundreds Santa Clauses. I love this city! However, in Darling Harbour Polish Christmas was held. It is promotion of Polish culture, music, carols, served with great food and beer.

31 October 2010 - Halloween and Sculpture by the Sea

Halloween I've never celebrated Halloween. It isn’t our tradition. But if someone just invited us, then why not go? We had just come up in disguise. Fortunately Chinese shop owners were stocked with cheap and fancy choice. Through it isn’t original, but important that we had a fun. At the party even Ghostbusters came. Unfortunately, no one celebrated the next All Saints Day. Here is no unique atmosphere of Polish cemeteries.

Sculpture by the Sea Sculpture by the Sea - is the name of the annual exhibition of contemporary sculptures. It is hold between Bondi and Tamarama beaches. This few kilometer walk along the cliff coast is unique itself. Anyway, I will never understand some art work. Actually the majority of them. Certainly I do not have the artist's soul. I always wanted to paint a picture - a black background with a yellow dot not centrally located. I would explain that as my vision of the world poisoned by sin, the eternal struggle between good and evil in the quantum dimension, like strawberry in the plum cake. Do you understand? - Does not matter, as I do not. After all, every year we find some artists' projects which surprised us with its ingenuity and originality. For example, a table and chairs with grass cover.

October 2010 - long weekend and festival

Jarvis Bay beach I do not know what the occasion was, but we had a long weekend. This opportunity couldn’t be wasted – we rented a car and went on a trip with friends. The first day was raining at all time - though we decided on a rainy walk - the views were... limited to our feet full of leeches attached to them. After the night at least we knew that we have good waterproof tents. Fortunately the next day was much nicer and we could relax on the long beach walks - with the blue sky and the sound of the ocean. There is no true Australian camp without a barbeque. We were perfectly prepared for it - none of us (six men) took the matches, as no one smokes. Locals had to save our honour and helped us to start the fire. Sausage was great. The last day we made another 16 km walk - at the very end of the tour I was shocked. I always say to everyone that snakes would go away from your path long enough before you could see them. And here the venomous reptile lied on the ground and had no intention to move on. Just one step more and I would have a friend on my conscience, but fortunately she bounced before the last step. I didn’t know what was going on, maybe the poor animal fell asleep or became ill with hypoplasia of crawling muscle? Snake escaped later on during the photo session.

James Cook Sydney enters era of the summer festival. After all, not in vain the city is announced the world's best city for events and festivals. You can clearly see some crazy ideas. This time I walked through the park and suddenly I saw that James Cook statue is wearing clothes (on the picture). He has sport shoes, socks, Bermuda-style shorts, Napoleon's hat, windproof coat, etc. What a joke! I found some more – their ex-queen, Victoria, they dressed up as grandma, even with a gray wig. breakfast on the bridgeI think that in Poland at this stage it would be a sort of civil war as an insult of national symbols. Australians are a little more relaxed, able to laugh from themselves.

What should come up with such an important occasion like a super-sounding date of 10/10/10. The city authorities came up with the idea to close the Harbour Bridge next to the Opera, spread out on the real grass (in the form of a carpet!) and invite residents for breakfast. Free of charge tickets could be draw, but unfortunately we had no luck in the lottery. Anyway, I went to see it - revelation. Picnic on the grass with a super view, just bring with you a blanket, food, wine and celebrate the date. I can’t wait to see what would come on 11.11.11 at 11:11:11am? That is why I love Sydney, as always so many positive and unexpected things happen.

September 2010 - sport and music

concert in Sydney 18/09/2010 Metallica heavy rock band during their World Tour didn’t miss Sydney. They play here four times, because for the first three concerts tickets were sold out within few hours. Fortunately I managed to buy a ticket for the recently announced the fourth concert, although no standing tickets were available. In addition to such hits as: Fade To Black, Sad But True, One, Master Of Puppets, Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman they also played 12 other songs which the most I liked: Fuel, Welcome Home, and my favorite from their latest album "Death Magnetic" Broken, Beat & Scarred. The whole show ended with a good old mad Seek and Destroy. And as I learned lyrics over the past three weeks, then I yelled loud along with the rest of 20.000 fans. I wanted to jump, scream, spread out the excess energy, but I was trapped in a chair. I will never go again for a heavy rock concert with a seating place – that was the first and the last time. Despite this, watching the band from the upper balcony I also had a good fun.

I commuted to the high school by bicycle. I've always wanted have a good road race bike, but the financial possibilities never allows me for it. In the internet age it’s a bit easier. In Sydney, I finally found a used bike in very good condition. It had everything what I had dreamed about 20 years ago. With one exception - as it is a racing track bike, it does not have speeds (fortunately it has installed brakes, because on the velodrome they are not in use.) And everything would be ok if not the hills, and those we have plenty in Sydney. On steep hills I had to push hard as the fixed gear (front and rear 48/16) not allows it otherwise. I have several ways for commuting to work, in the city center there are roads for bicycles only, and on arrival at work I have a shower. That becomes to me much quicker than using public transport, and bicycle will be financially reimbursed after 2-3 months of commuting. Now alternately in each direction home-work: I’m cycling and running, running again, and cycling. From time to time I use the bus or train. Varieties, saving time and money, health – just pure advantages. My wife also got infected, so she runs to work.

We began to host couchsurfers. Finally we have a separate room and a couch. First the Polish traveler, than Germans met in Sydney, and recently a Polish couple traveling around the world along with a 2-year-old child. Now we sit in chairs and listen to the stories from all over the world.

August 2010 - meeting

Justin Jones and Marcin Gienieczko In mid-August I hosted Marcin Gienieczko, Polish explorer (right on picture). He just had crossed Australia by bicycle from north to south, and now he is resting in Sydney before the next step. He is preparing for sailing to Hobart on his sea boat-kayak. Bass Strait has a bad reputation - the variable ocean currents, strong winds and powerful waves may make the passage impossible. Marcin doesn’t mind the new challenges, and I listened with interest the story about his previous freezing Siberian and North American travels.

With Marcin we met Justin Jones (left on picture). He has considerable experience in the sea kayaking and gave Marcin a few essential tips. He is known here for his sea kayak passage from Australia to New Zealand. Along with his friend James Castrission they were the first people in the history who made this trip successful. The details of this full of unpredictable situations expedition you can see on their website www.crossingtheditch.com.au. They published nice movie and book "Crossing the Ditch".

8 August 2010 - City to Surf

City 2 Surf is the largest annual running race in the world. This year the number of applications was limited, nevertheless, at the start line appeared 68,000 runners! For me it is one of the best Sydney event. From the city center we run in the crowds, supported by spectators and music bands, along the charming city and coast landscape, to finish the 14 km course at the most popular city beach - Bondi. There, after receiving a souvenir medal, despite the calendar winter, many participants cool down in the ocean.

I was not in good shape this year, following the Chinese adventure there are still many months of work to get a high running condition. As the large number of participants, my place wasn’t too bad (371), but in sport terms I was defeated - more than three minutes slower then my personal best (and more than 200 places down). This year no friends were waiting for me at the finish line - this is because Ewelina ran herself. In China we had enough spare time, so she began to run – there is never too late for sport. For a person not having much interest in sport at all, it’s a challenge to complete 14 km jogging in less than two hours - congratulations! It's all about to defeat yourself. And my wife did.

31 July 2010 - changes

new apartment Sometimes life brings us a time for important decisions. Over the past 15 years I lived in shared accommodation, sharing room/house with other students, workers and travelers. I got used to it, as it always was someone at home to talk. However, we decided that is the time to find something for ourselves. We did not want to live in studio, because to be able to host visitors and friends, we needed a second room. Sydney is not cheap, one-bedroom apartments have high rental rates and this forced us to leave the city center. Since 2002 I have always lived within walking distance from the Opera, I was in the city center every day, at work, at school, on walks, shopping or on running sessions. And that hurts me the most - now I live "in the countryside". Marrickville suburb is even quite enjoyable and nice, but at evening's nothing happening there. I have now 8 km to the CBD, so I can finally “taste” the daily routine of commuting to work (although sometimes I run back home - quicker!)

Renting the place just for us, however, has its advantages. First of all we are the hosts, we can receiving any guests we like without squeezing on two mattresses in one small room. Now in the lounge we have a couch, so couchsurfers or any other travellers are welcome. We still need to collect some household appliances, but this is fun.

July 2010 - the city always alive

A lot of events happen around. Actually, none of the global event/exhibition miss Sydney. Therefore there is always something to do. On the beach there is an action to save the whales - promotion and education why should we fight not to kill these creatures. Near the city Cathedral an open-air ice rink is opened - in Australia is a something original. World Press Photo exhibition leaves behind a dramatic impression. But thanks to it we might more appreciate how lucky we are living in peace and freedom.

4:30am Monday morning, 10 Celsius degrees - but the streets were full of people. The World Cup final just started. The city council set the big screens on the Darling Harbour waters. Together with couchsurfing friends we met at this event – great fun. And because I’m always supporting the Spanish team, I had an exceptional great day.

I’ve got the same job as the last time – sale assistant in outdoor shop. However, not enough hours in my last employer company pushed me to move on to the competition – this time Columbia Sportswear.

June 2010 - finally in our lovely Sydney

I love Sydney, I love Australia! Maybe it's true that after frustrating China anything would be great, but Sydney is amazing.

Fresh air was the first shock. Blue sky, white clouds, green grass – another one. More positive impressions I had from local people - "good morning" and smile from strangers, "have a nice day" from shop assistant, help from the bus driver etc. Drivers stop before road cross, lady at the ticket office is no angry that I’m disturbing her, and even the immigration officer does not avoid smiling. It was my fourth time to come to Australia, and the fourth time I'm enthusiastic.

A few hours later I was greeted by old friends, we had a grill party on the beach. In Sydney it is a winter, but I still passed hundreds of surfers and runners (taxi drivers did not attempt to give them a lift:) Bread, butter, chocolate, cheese, wine - even the food delights, as humans need variety.

It is wonderful, coming back is a nice feeling. We got jobs, we back to live in our old house. How wonderful is to be busy from morning till evening. Life is beautiful.

May 2010 - Shanghai

unbelievable UK construction During May week off we went to Shanghai, which is hosting the international exposition EXPO 2010. The exhibition proved to be excellent - we liked the original ideas and modern technology. From our perspective the best pavilions presented: Chile, Spain, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, and the most original design had UK. It was a very interesting day.

In the largest Chinese city we rode bicycles like crazy, learning from locals how to drives against the traffic on one way street, cross the intersections at a red light, and turns to the left where you shouldn't, etc. it has been extremely exciting. Shanghai has some old buildings, but beyond them skyscrapers are dominating, including the fly kite on a fishing rod famous TV Pearl Tower and Financial Center (492 m). The city is clean, safe, modern, etc, all European country would be proud of these achievements.

The perfect week have been complited thanks to our couchsurfing hosts. We had parties with BBQ grill, wine, flew a kite from 33rd apartment floor. Just plays, spontaneous and pure laziness.

On the way back to Shandong we have visited the Confucius Temple in Qufu, and climbed the Taoists holy mountain Tai Shan.

March 2010 - it's time to work

pig's facesSchool sent us an email - we immediately have to come back to work, in two days classes are starting (short notice again). Ok, we were going back, but before our departure they could not tell us when the new semester starts, and now they telling us we must come back so quickly. Of course we were not physically able to come back in 48 hours. Therefore we missed a few days and we showed up at school office – guess what? Students didn't return yet from holiday! I tried to be calm, as I didn't want more tension with the university authorities. However, they were continuing to ignore us – they broke another promises which gave to us last term. No money, no travel refunds, no classes (all in contract). Explanation of the bureaucracy is not enough - laziness, dishonesty and ignorance should be called by name. For me you are worth the same as your promise – I stopped to respect them. Again, it was necessary to call someone on the higher position to solve the problem, but little were improving. In November I wrote on website that everyone here is wonderful – that was a true until I realized that we are treated as unpaid labors.

country ideology leadersI haven't have classes for the next two weeks, despite the fact that students have already returned and self studied in the classrooms. School explained that there is no schedule yet, but this nonsense could be explain only by fact, that we are kept here for the university image: “in our college foreigner teachers are working”. Yes, we are staying on the campus, but for another two weeks we won't be paid because we do not work. Unfortunately, the other Chinese teachers also are treated badly by the university authorities - as you can see, we had bad luck. Nevertheless, I still saying it's worth to come to China, but when choosing a school you should first contact with some foreigner who works there - it will be the best source of information.

We just have returned from our trip to southern China. 6 weeks of relaxation. But is China beautiful? There are places worth visiting, but to reach them you need to pass many urban areas. I must admit that at least 90% of the country is ugly - concrete and rubbish, all in disorder, gray sky (pollution), noise and chaos. But when I got to these beautiful places, it remains in my memory as something to admire. However, I have mixed feelings - never before in any country I could say that once I love it, and other time I hate it. And China is like that. When I see the commercialization of tourist sites, the destruction of the environment, human mass stupidity and authorities dishonesty etc. - I have enough. On the other hand, the rice terraces in Yuangyangmajority of ordinary people living here are the great people, honest, hospitable and helpful. And we have met them often on our route.

Finally I have started the classes - after 2 weeks of unemployment. Hmm, in our village there isn't even a pub, after 9pm streets are going to asleep. Ewelina has been hired for a few hours a week to primary school, and they took me off the old classes, making confusion in the schedule (will be different rooster each week). So, I am not able to plan properly a normal teaching and assessment program. But new students have a good motivation for learning, so together we have begun to work hard. Again I have started to enjoy staying here.

February 2010 - Publication

In Polish magazine Globtroter (Feb, nr 30/2010) we poblished our article -
My photos and Ewelina's story from 2007 trip across Africa.

24th January 2010 - time for the journey

It is clear what we should get:)It turns out that someone does not keep promise here – we are still fighting with the university about the money. Before I believed them the spoken word and I've heard every day "tomorrow". We are angry for all the lies and disrespect. We had to get directly to the top officer, a pity that we have realized it after two months (it was not just about salary, but as well about promised flight refund and one month paid holiday). So now I have two extreme images of China. On one hand people in the school (of course not all of them) breaking promises. On the other hand - teachers, students and ordinary people from the street - hard working and honest, we respect them.

Anyway I recommend to come to work in China - because it is an interesting experience. You just must be very patient. I suggest you, however, require all the details in writing (living condition, paid holidays, refunds etc.), because then we have a chance to claim our rights officially. We also met teachers here who have no major problems, everything depend on situation. I definitely would not recommend the Angelina's ESL Café agency and Linyi Normal University.

Tomorrow we are going out from Yishui. We want to relax and forget the unpleasant atmosphere - we hope to come back in 6 week with full of energy to work. In Shandong Province is a bit too cold (average temperature in January is 1°C below zero), and because we like warm places, we are going South.

1st January 2010 - New Year

studenents are preparing food for the party 30th December – this time we even didn't get 5 minutes notice – I was put inside the car straight from the classroom. It is impossible not to notice the fact that part of the campus is going to be destroyed. Half of the university has been demolished - every few days one building collapse. One week they dug and took almost all the trees from here. The college president took us to show the new campus - I already have a postcard with this virtual campus - it looks impressive. The reality looks a bit different - the new campus is one big construction site in the early stage of development. Although I'd be a little careful here - I noticed that the Chinese are masters of construction. We'll see in a few months how the work goes. After that the University Principal invited us for for an excellent dinner and Chinese lantern and wishestraditional tea custom. When we were already full and happy, we continued our New Year party in the relaxing natural hot springs.

The New Year's Eve - students said that the party is tomorrow, not today. Unfortunately, we were the only people in the campus who waited until midnight. When the time came there was still the perfect silence. I left the room in search of the fireworks. After 5 seconds, I wanted to see at least a candle flame, any source of light. I spent the New Year's morning in the classroom and in the evening I went to classes again - and what's a surprise - the classrooms were decorated in balloons, and ribbons, flowers, "Happy New Year" banner, food, candies etc. (no alcohol!). There was a party time! All students prepared some short show - the most popular was karaoke singing. I really like these students, such a good guys. But when 8.35pm came, like every day they quickly had to get back to the student's house. At 9pm they are locked in and half an hour later the the light is off. But on the way to bed some of them were releasing colorful lanterns for the hot air. It was raised to heaven with our wishes. It would be hard to have another such a great year, but we hope so. I wish you all the best in the New Year.

25th December 2009 - Christmas

in the classroom with the stick1 month has passed - probably the first time in my life I wasn't upset for anyone for such a long period. Simply everyone is nice and helpful. Of course, everything has its end - and this set payday. It was not just about overdue payments, but the whole deal - and suddenly the University is negotiating with us all the conditions of the new contract, of course worse conditions then previously promised. This was a period of frustration and lack of understanding that we already have established conditions in Mongolia, 2 months ago. We realized that there was a misunderstanding between the university to which we signed the contract, and our campus, where we were the first contracted foreigners. Well, in the end they promised to provide what we arranged from the beginning, but some negative emotions left (fortunately we are not sure who blamed for this misunderstanding).

run race By the way, we were informed that in a few weeks the academic year ends and we will have 2 months holiday (they finally agreed to pay for one month). In practice this meant - in the next week we do not have classes, but we have to give a final assessment of all students (nearly 500 per person). It turned out that the students knew about it long time ago, just a pity that no one informed us. Ok, well, we are doing exams. So I gave them a topic "Modern science and its influence on the lunar calendar in the progressive perspective" and told to prepare 15-minute speech. Students were a little scared, but politely note it in the notebooks. Finally I have told them it was a joke - they can say whatever they want, just speak English.

Christmas Eve in the roomWell, Christmas Eve came - students awaken us at 7am and announced that this morning exams are canceled today because there is a run race. We went to the race - and suddenly a crowd of supporters have run like a torpedo - no, actually that were ladies runners in the colorful down jackets. Well, yes, it was cold. They asked if I want to run. Hmm, I had 10 minutes to be ready – quickly change (in China my sport uniform size is XXL or XXXL - it's not a joke and I am 178 cm tall and 66 kg weight). There was no time for warm-up, but this race is a fun run. I had hundreds of supporters, I enjoyed it.

3pm already, I'm slowly finishing the last exam today. Suddenly dinner invitation comes from the President. When? - I asked. About 5pm. No, please give us a notice in advance – I tried to explain them again about inconvenience of the short notice. Today is Christmas Eve (the most important day in Polish tradition) and we don't go anywhere. It's not good to refuse your boss, but sometimes necessary. So we stayed in our room and had a great dinner with gifts under the Christmas tree – including Polish chocolate (Chinese one tastes like a soup). We got from our students a lot of nice wrapped apples – Chinese custom.

dinnerChristmas – I didn't even want to explain the school, that in the contract we supposed to get day off - students waited for this exam in stress. After we had different plans for Christmas - and again we got 2 hours notice from the school authorities - Christmas dinner tonight invitation. Uh, that everything would be fine if we got some longer notice. We did not refuse a second time - and it was quite nice, but they tried to force us to drink more alcohol. Certainly I would drink more if I did hear “you will finish that glass now”. I am showing respect by behavior not by amount of drinks. I think that culture respect and understanding should go on both sides.

15th November 2009 - XIII edition of book "Przez Świat" (Across the World)

Unfortunately this year I missed Polish travellers meeting (OSOTT) in Szczyrk. I extremely happy that I was awarded for African reportage, which was published in the book "Across the World" (In Polish). I am delighted that once again I could help editing such a useful book.

5th November 2009 - First days in China

universityWe are living in student's campus in Yishui, Shandong Province. For China this is a small town, but actually population here reached over 1.2 million inhabitants. We are teaching Oral English and we have 15-16 working hours per week, and classes contain... between 50 and 80 students! But we do not have any educational problems, as students (average of 20-21 years old) are polite and disciplined.

But the first day we will be remember as an horror. When we were coming at night to the city full of factories, that caused the impression than we were in a terribly small village, a concrete dark desert, without electricity. Our room was small, cold and smelly. They told us, that there is no other foreigners in the town. We were afraid of poor living conditions, lack of social activities, but most of all loneliness in the crowd. Fortunately, the Chinese take care about us, they are extremely nice, helpful and effective. Many of the contract problems have been solved, allowing us to forget about the stress and frustration for the early days.

student's campusOn the official welcome dinner we were given our new Chinese names. Later we celebrated with drinking toasts and lots of sensational Chinese food. At one point, waitress brought trays of fried insects, birds and boiled dog meat. Two latter dishes have been beyond of my psychological resistance, but I gave up and tried the insect. Cicada had small eyes and legs, but tasted like muesli bar (only the wings were hard to chew).

After the first week, everything is easier and better. Teaching takes place in a relaxed atmosphere, our small room begins look nicer, is warmer and doesn't smell any more. We discovered more city districts, new street stalls and interesting places. Local people look at us as someone from another planet - with curiosity, kindness and smile, often taking hidden pictures of us (exp. sale assistants in shops). But they are extremely friendly, cheerful and helpful. We feel welcome here and we are well treated.

What we are missing and what surprised us? First of all, the lack of cheese and chocolate, as well as bread and butter. But for food we can't complain, because there are many cheap, varied and tasty meals - it will be the healthiest year for us in terms of proper nutrition. We can't find a cheap Chinese T-shirts, towels and plastic accessories, which usually we were buying in Poland or Australia.

26th August 2009 - Publication

There is my Simpson Desert article in August edition of Australian Geographic Outdoor.

6th July until 4th November 2009 - Honeymoon trip in Central Asia

We started from Caucasus - Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Then Iran - one of my favourite country. And the former Soviet republics - Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, (brief jump to Afghanistan), Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Here, the unexpected change of plans - instead of returning to Australia, we went through Russia to Mongolia. For 2 months we visited the Genghis Khan country, waiting for a Chinese working visa.

Detailed reportage in preparation.

our route

10th June 2009 - Wedding

After 6 years living together we decided with Ewelina to formalise our relationship. The wedding took place in Tychy, Poland, among family and the closest friends. To the church I was driving old East German car called "trabant", and for the wedding party we hitchhiked.
